The response was slow at first and, as a result, thousands died. But its much more complex than that in countries steeped in tradition and custom. Do we really understand Africa? Ebola could be a Game Changer
The war in the Ukraine
It began with annexation of the Crimea by Russia but in all reality the way in the Ukraine had been brewing well before 2014. However, it has defined a line in the sand between east and west and could very well have been the catalyst for the rise of the iron curtain.
As we end 2014 MH 370 is still missing and MH 17 is still the subject of investigation. Hundreds of families may never see their loved ones bodies again and yet one airline bought an often divided nation together - Malaysia
In 2014 Vladimir Putin began to show his hand to the west and in doing so has attempted to reassert Russian power. Cold war bombers are flying again, the Crimea has been annexed and Russian backed rebels are alleged to have shot down MH 17. What Putin does next could define 2015
The war in Syria and the rise of ISL
While the war raged across Syria it was the rise of ISL that took the world by surprise as they rolled across Northern Iraq. It took a long time before a coalition was formed and as we end 2014 the gains ISL have made are yet to be paired back. The atrocities continue.

Many say he is a Pope for the times and yet he is humble, open and of the people - not the institution. In 2014 he moved the catholic church towards reform - in 2015 will he last the distance?

how our world was defined in 2014
15 Images that helped define 2014
Each year our world is shaped by the events around us. Often these events are outside of our control and yet they seek to shape and define us. From war and conflict to the passing of people who inspired entire generations. From the rise of people from obscurity to become influencers of our time to the people that will play game changing roles in the year ahead.
This year we have chosen 15 events and people that we beleive have shaped the world in which we live today. Some are confronting and others are filled with hope. What we aim to do is have you pause and think - how did this event impact me? what did it mean for me? and then - what can I do tomorrow to make the world a better place.
We don't get it right all the time and we are sure there are much more powerful images and events out there that you think are worthy of inclusion. So, we encourage you to post them on our Facebook or Google + pages. We'll be creating a montage of images for publication on Christmas eve - so make sure you add something.
On behalf of the team at EntreHub i'd lke to wish you all a very merry Christmas and all of the best for 2015. I'd also like to leave you with two quotes that sum up the year for me - a year where war was ever present and yet hope continued to spring eternal. Tolstoy once said that "You may not be interested in war, but war is interested in you" - therefore, lets end conflicts not start new ones in 2015. And, Maya Angelou "If you get, give. If you learn, teach.
