WIX Facebook failure irks small business customers

There is a golden lesson in today’s online world of business – don’t get in the way of a start-up or small business trying to build its social media presence. It appears that the people at online services and website provider WIX appear to have missed that point as a serious flaw in its many templates has seen small businesses and start-ups lose their ability to collect Facebook LIKES with their posts.
With potentially many thousands of websites affected WIX is not exactly responding in the way many want them to which is “I want the problem fixed”. The issues lies in the connector between the WIX site and a function offered by Facebook which allows you to embed a LIKE on to any number of your pages thereby allowing each page to have its own LIKE counter – in other words, if you run blogs and post articles or provide services and products then each page can have its individual LIKE counter.
Importantly for small businesses using WIX sites it acts as a popularity tool where those who access the site are able to look at how popular it is. Often the number of LIKES a site has will not only determine its popularity it can also turn into sales. Wix acknowledges that:
“We have received many complaints regarding users losing their Facebook Like count on their Wix site.”
“We have approached Facebook regarding this matter and they have informed us that this is a known issue related to Like buttons that are connected to a non-Facebook URL and that they are investigating.”
“Please note that the Facebook API is the engine that provides the counter for your Facebook Like button. This applies to the Facebook Like app from Wix, as well as Facebook's code to generate the Like counter using the HTML App.”
But then they go onto say “If you are experiencing a loss in your Facebook Like count for your site's URL, then please contact Facebook regarding this matter.”
And therein lies the problem. As many users have pointed out they don’t pay Facebook for a service instead they pay WIX and WIX in turn provides the Facebook pointer as a key feature. So far, there is no timeline to the issue being resolved yet this isn’t stopping the complaints:
User hammidedesert says: “i had over 500 likes and they are all gone!!” while
heathercollins13 begged for her LIKES to be returned: “HELP!!!! Put them back!!!”
When we contacted WIX 48 hours ago we received the same answer many users have which is basically – we are working on it. So, at the same time we posed the question to WIX we also took it to Facebook and asked: “How and when will this problem be resolved?” – 48 hours later and we are still no clearer.
A count of more than two dozen support tickets launched with WIX in the last 48 hours tells us that the total Facebook LIKES lost run into thousands and tens of thousands.
So, coming back to the point – never get in between a start-up or small business and their ability to grow their social media audience because as WIX may learn unless they fix the problem there may be other alternatives.
It is worth pointing out that Google + is unaffected as is the Twitter counter used in the same way as the Facebook LIKE button – so who’s fault is it? Who cares we hear you say? In other words what we are being told is simply this “just fix it”
