You could be forgiven for thinking that the board game was dead, done and dusted. With the rise of online and APP games it is a fair thing to assume but, don’t assume too much. To mark Monopoly’s 80th anniversary the games owners decided to go out to the public and asked them what cities would they like to see in the latest version called “Here and Now: World Edition”.
Tens of thousands of people voted which was not a bad strategy to get people reconnected with the game which now has multiple editions ranging from Disney Monopoly to Harley Davidson and the NFL. In fact there are more than 100 official editions of the board game.
According to Harbo, maker of the popular board game, there was fierce competition between the cities and some even went so far as to get involved in the campaign. In the end though there were always going to be winners and losers with a few wild cards thrown in. The wild cards took out the brown spaces usually occupied by the least valued properties with the honour going to Giethoorn in the Netherlands and Madrid from Spain.
Next in line were the blue spots which went to Queenstown in New Zealand, Cape Town in South Africa and Taipei in Taiwan.
Yellow: Warsaw, Poland; Mexico City, Mexico; Santiago, Chile
Red: Belfast, Ireland; Athens, Greece; Belgrade, Serbia
Orange: London, England; Moscow, Russia; Tokyo, Japan
Magenta: New York, USA; Amsterdam, Netherlands; Sydney, Australia
What lessons can entrepreneurs and small business start-ups learn from this process? Well, the need to always innovate on top of existing products is key to survival and maintaining a competitive advantage. If you don’t refresh your product, your brand or even your offering then someone else invariably will.
Personally we thought that the “In Jail” space may as well be occupied by the Kremlin, the utilities could be renewable energy companies, super tax could be the World Bank and community chest the UN – but that’s just us!
